Restaurant Review:
Sumo Sushi & Bento

Town Centre
Dubai

One of our first tastings after a ‘Sushi’ hiatus of a few months due to personal reasons, was to try out the new menu at Sumo Sushi and Bento and boy were we excited to dig into that meal or what! Sumo Sushi and Bento has been around Dubai and the region for more than 15 years and is one of the names that always comes up when one thinks about where to go for some good Japanese food. The bright restaurant has a menu that offers a diversity of dishes like interesting Bento boxes, rice and noodle dishes, colorful Sushi and the current rage, Poke Bowls, among others. Here’s what we had at our tasting:

  • Gyoza: Hand Folded Chicken Dumplings Seared To Perfection, Served With Sumo Gyoza Sauce
  • Golden Ito Ebi: Kunafa Spun Prawns Deep Fried To A Golden Crisp Served With Our Sweet Chili Dipping Sauce
  • Japanese Curry Katsu: Breaded, Deep-Fried Chicken Cutlet Served With A Traditional Japanese Curry Sauce Over A Bed Of Rice
  • Vietnam Roll: Shrimp And Crabstick Stuffed With Thin Slices Of Avocados, Cucumbers, Carrots And Lettuce
  • Yaki Udon: Stir Fried Noodles With Shrimp, Chicken And Vegetables

Sushi Rolls

  • Phoenix: Prawn And Crabstick Tempura, Cucumber And Seasoning Rolled Together Then Topped With Salmon, Sweet Chili Sauce And Garnished With Crispy Salmon Skin
  • Sweet Potato Crunch: Prawns, Crabstick And Avocado Drizzled With A Mix Of Mayo, Sweet Chili And Teriyaki Sauce All Topped With Crispy Sweet Potatoes
  • Crazy 8: Crabstick, Cucumber And Avocado Rolled Together Then Topped With Salmon Skin And Deep Fried With Panko Creating A Crunchy Outer Layer Then Drizzled With Spicy Mayo And Tobiko
  • Veggie Futomaki: Fresh Vegetables Rolled With Sushi Rice And Covered With Nori
  • Harumaki: Fresh Vegetables Fried In A Light Tempura Batter Served With Sweet Chili Dipping Sauce
  • Mochi: A combination of creamy gourmet ice cream wrapped in a sweetened rice confection in different flavors such as mango, kiwi and strawberry

Drinks

  • Matcha Milkshake
  • Lemon Mint

We must admit that after that Sushi sabbatical, it felt great to gulp down the multihued rolls at Sumo. With regard to taste, we really enjoyed the appetizers, sushi rolls and the Yaki Udon but the Katsu curry fell short of expectations. The drinks perfectly complemented the food on the table and there could have been no better end to the meal than the cool and creamy Mochi.

Overall, Sumo Sushi & Bento gets a yay from us.
