Restaurant Review:
Matto

Oberoi Hotel
Dubai

This restaurant has been christened after the Italian word for ‘crazy’ and it proudly claims to play by its own rules! Matto positions itself as a purely Italian restaurant that takes a stand against normality and provides an authentic Italian experience like no other. Located at the beautiful Oberoi Hotel in Business Bay, Matto’s interiors boast of a blend of old-world Italian charm and a quirky, warehouse style feel which honestly reminded us of our trips to Italy and the building and window structures they have in the country. We were recently invited to try out the Friday brunch at the restaurant and here is everything we had:

Antipasti

  • Insalata Caprese: Buffalo Mozzarella, Cherry Tomatoes, Mixed Leaves, Oregano, Basil, Extra Virgin Oil
  • Lenticchie: Cold Lentil, Fennel, Zucchini, Capsicum, Cucumber, Red Onion, Almonds, Cherry Tomatoes, Lemon, Balsamic Vinegar Reduction
  • Carpaccio Di Salmone: 24 H Marinated Salmon Carpaccio, Asparagus Salad, Lime Chives, Yoghurt
  • Calamari Fritti: Crispy Squid Rings, Lemon Mayonnaise

Pizza

  • Parmigiana: Mozzarella, Tomato, Egpplants, Rocket, Parmesan, Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Margherita: Mozzarella, Tomato, Basil

Paste & Risotto

  • Risotto Ai Gamberi: Carnaroli Risotto, Shrimps, Zucchini
  • Ravioli Ricotta & Spinaci: Homemade Ravioli Stuffed With Ricotta Cheese & Spinach, Fresh Cherry Tomato Sauce, Basil

Please note that there are beef items on the menu but as we don’t eat beef, we obviously didn’t get those items. The calamari were fresh and delicious while the carpaccio appealed to even the one amongst us who isn’t too fond of fish. This was our first time trying the Lenticchie and it was quite reminiscent of other lentil salads that we have had albeit with some Italian touches. The Parmigiana was a proper treat and both pizzas were ample in size. The Margherita though was nothing extraordinary and we’ve had similar or better ones at other restaurants. Finally, the pastas! The pastas were the winners of the entire meal with the Ravioli clinching first place for us. We couldn’t help but thank the Chefs for their magnanimity in terms of the amount of Ricotta in the ravioli. This main made our day!

Dolci

  • Tiramisu: Mascarpone, coffee, ladyfinger biscuits, cocoa
  • Sporcamusi: Puff pastry & cream, icing sugar
  • Striscette: Lightly fried dough strips, Nutella, icing sugar

The dessert platter was a pleasant sight for sore eyes and quite an enjoyable selection. Decent Tiramisu, flavorsome puff pastries and Churro like dough strips that we drowned in Nutella made for nice ends to the meal.

All in all, Matto has a pleasant ambiance and some nice fare and nestled in the picturesque Oberoi hotel, it ends up being quite the venue for a cozy Friday brunch.
