Restaurant Review:
Kauai

Park Island, Dubai Marina

The awareness for healthy food and drink is on the rise in Dubai and Kauai arrives as the perfect option for those on the lookout for fresh and nutritious fare. We recently attended a tasting session at this bright little outlet that is located in Dubai Marina and were happily full (and definitely not guiltily at all)!

So, a little background about Kauai first. Kauai is the brainchild of three American friends who discovered the treasure trove of luscious fruits on the island paradise of Kauai in Hawaii. As they feasted on the delicious fruits, they decided to share the goodness and created the Kauai Juice bar that started with only one juicer and they began supplying to major hotels, restaurants and health food stores. A trip to Cape Town took the dream a step further as the friends then opened the very first Kauai store in 1996 in the Mother City! There was no looking back then and the restaurant has flourished with numerous outlets opening doors the world over and the fresh juices, smoothies, sandwiches, wraps and more quickly becoming favorites of people around the world.

So, here is everything we indulged in during our visit:

Drinks:
  • Mango Bang: Pineapple, Banana, Coconut and Mango Juice
  • Dubai Cooler: Apple, Pineapple, Cucumber, Celery and Fresh mint

Appetizers & Salads:
  • Hummus & Whole-wheat Pita chips
  • Grilled Oriental Chicken Salad: Grilled chicken breast with a chili and coriander glaze, oranges, almonds, sesame seeds, cos lettuce, carrots, cucumbers, red cabbage and honey sesame dressing.

Mains:
  • Tex-Mex Salsa: Sautéed chicken breast with a chipotle citrus marinade, roasted chipotle tomato salsa, fresh salsa and lettuce
  • Lamb kofta wrap: Lamb Kofta with Hummus, coriander chili pesto, lettuce, tomato and cucumber yogurt relish.

When Kauai say fresh, they mean fresh and we found everything we ate light yet very flavorful! The Hummus and whole wheat pita chips are must have appetizers. Considering the fact that they are nutritious, these would make for the best snacks to have when hunger hits. The oriental twist to the salad would appeal to those who are fussy when it comes to eating their five a day while the mains are both easy on the stomach and a delicious combination of palatable sauces and tangy toppings. With regard to the drinks, both were refreshing and welcome in the unrelenting summer that we have begun to face in Dubai, however the mango bang has an overpowering taste of banana and tends to fill you up pretty fast.

Our experience was further enhanced by the lovely and very chatty restaurant Manager, Tandi from Zimbabwe, who has been an integral part of the Kauai chain and very enthusiastically shared stories about the restaurant and more! Kauai dispels the myth that healthy food has to be straightforward and boring with its wonderful menu that blends fresh ingredients with delectable flavors!
